The Duchess of Sussex has worn mostly neutral tones since her wedding. With just one outfit Meghan Markle has made up for her perceived sartorial sins since becoming a duchess. In the six weeks following her wedding day, the newest royal has underwhelmed fans by wearing loose dresses and a color palette that didn’t extend beyond the cauliflower-to-coral range. But Thursday — gasp! — she actually wore a color. At the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Youth Leadership Workshop, she appeared with Prince Harry in a sleeveless yellow Brandon Maxwell dress that showed off her form, and there’s likely a very logical reason why the duchess finally wore an attention-grabbing ensemble. After wearing one outfit after another in neutral tones like oatmeal and blush pink, the bold color proved to be a hit for Markle’s fans. The Express called the Duchess of Sussex “a vision in yellow,” while the Meghan’s Mirror fashion blog described Markle’s look as “a home run.” Fans on the site cheered both the bright hue of the dress, which is already sold out, and the cut, which showed off her toned arms. The simple shift dress, which retails for $1495, shows that Markle knows how to make a bold statement with a minimalist dress. Except for a rounded neckline and a short slit in the back, the shift had no distinguishing features besides its color. But that was likely the point, and Markle drove it home by wearing her hair in a sleek chignon and nude pumps that served to put the spotlight of her look entirely on the dress.
So why did it take her so long to wear a vivid shade after her May 19 wedding? After all, she wore eggplant, green, and blue in the months leading up to the ceremony. It’s likely because since her nuptials, Markle has appeared at several events where neither she nor Harry were the focus. That’s included the wedding of her cousin-in-law — where a floral Oscar de la Renta dress Markle wore was widely panned — and celebrations for both Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth. Until now, the duchess hasn’t been the star of any outing she’s attended. That changed Thursday, as did the perception that Markle must downplay her style now that she’s a royal. What better way than yellow for Markle to signal that she hasn’t lost her trademark sparkle just yet.
